Making Mixed Media Holiday Art Cards

Cards with paint, machine stitching and really great paper. See the supply list below.

With emails, texts and DM’s becoming so commonplace, it’s always a nice way to set yourself out from the crowd by sending a handwritten thank you note. When stationary won’t do, I like to make mixed media art cards to send through the mail. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are making your own card.

It is nice to work on a large sheet of paper that you can cut down to the size you need. You’ll make a bunch of “card paintings” before you know it. I like this paper here.

I get a lot of questions about sewing machines and I have to be honest, the sewing machine I use is total overkill. A garage sale sewing machine is awesome for art purposes. A free motion foot is super cool to be able to write and free-hand your stiches. Whatever you do, make sure your paint is dry, even super dry, before you stitch anything. Always test run on paper before feeding your art through the machine.

I’ve been using these Fabriano Medioevalis cards for years. They are amazing to touch and hold and will certainly wow your recipients. I love the soft deckled edges.

Pro-Tip: A group of these packaged together is a great grab and go item for your fair booth! 😉
