Small. Then Big.

Almost all of the class samples that I teach my process on are 20x20 inches. The size is not too small, not too big, and I can film great close up shots of the processes so that people can practice and copy them in their own homes. It is my intention to show a handful of techniques in each of my online workshops that people can copy while painting along with the class sample, and then pick and choose any of them to translate the process into their own voices afterwards.

“Infinity” 20x20”. Class sample from my Expressionism Vol 2 online workshop.

Take a look at the painting above, “Infinity”. I film this piece start to finish in my “Expressionism Vol 2” online workshop.* That workshop will allow the student to progress through 4 different styles of layered abstract paintings. FOUR! We could never paint that many paintings in an in person workshop. But it’s totally do-able with the magic of video. 😊 Fast forward to taking the same techniques that you mastered painting on “Infinity” to my newest painting, “Where’s My Umbrella?”

“Where’s My Umbrella?”, 36x48”. Tap the photo for more details.

Gorgeous, layered, vibrant blues? Check. The only difference in my new painting is that I added some collage in the lower left corner. But it doesn’t have to be blue..

“Friends With Neptune”, 30x40”. Held in private collection.

The same layering techniques are also shown in the painting above. In fact, because it doesn’t feature collage, the process on “Friends With Neptune” is practically identical to “Infinity”! So, the next time you are painting, rather than thinking that you need to replicate the class sample in my workshop and then be finished with the class.. try to apply the same techniques into a different painting! Either way, I am always available to answer questions from my students along the way. I love to do it.

*The Expressionism Vol 2 online workshop was filmed prior to the “Expanding on Color” workshop. Subsequently, the Expressionism Vol 2 online workshop features a more extensive supply list because we are not mixing every color from “scratch” per say. If supply budget is a concern, I recommend the “Expanding on Color” online workshop.
