18x24" Acrylic on Wood

I thought about packing up my art studio today and converting the space into a guest bedroom or office...but I have no where to keep the packed up paint. The studio stays...but there sure is not much going on in here these days.. maybe I am a cold weather painter. How about you?

Paint Slathered Walls..

When I was filming the last workshop, I needed to create an art-filled space in the house that I could sit in front of while filming.. I quickly threw these paintings up onto the wall. I thought my husband was going to be mortified with all of the new holes in the plaster...but he didn't mind. I really like the paintings in a large group like this and have not taken them down..in fact, I am looking to create more art to fill in some of the spaces.

All of these paintings have been created by using techniques in any of the variety of classes we are offering now. Let me know if you have any questions about them.

Summer Blues? Not in my new online workshop!

Yesterday was the first day of summer break for Kate and I. It was terrible. I had so many errands and appointments yesterday...I drove everywhere...used a 1/2 of tank of gas...and at the end of the day I was left with the felling of, "What in the hell happened today?" It was stressful to say the least.

Today's another day...and hopefully it will be met with some relaxation and a much slower pace.

If you want to treat yourself this summer, my brand new online experience is now open. We'll make the painting you see here in ONE of the lessons...And. So. Much. More. Check it out by clicking here.

I hope to see you!

It's sci-fi weekend here. We watched ET last night and tonight we'll hope for good conditions so that we can see the eclipse tonight... Good times. Hope you are having a great weekend!

Stencil Giveway!

16x12; mixed media on paper

I have been out of practice for using stencils in my artwork, but when The Crafters Workshop came calling, I said, why yes! I would love to try out some of your stencils!

How to incorporate stencils into my abstract art is a little challenging to me. I don't want them to look deliberate..or uniform..so I take extra care to spray or paint through them haphazardly. I also don't want them to look like someone else's art..I take bits and pieces of the stencil and lay them throughout the art and I think I overcome those challenges pretty well.

Gracious Jaime over at The Crafter's Workshop sent me a bunch of stencils...that I want to share with you! Leave me a comment and list one of the ways you will use the stencils if you win the drawing. I will pick one winner on May 9th (international entries welcome!!) for a package of 7 brand new 12x12" stencil templates. (One entry per person; entry must be a comment on this post; must leave a valid email address so I don't have to go on a hunt to find you.)

Good luck...tell your friends to stop by too! Thank you for reading my blog. Stop by Friday to see some more stencil art.

A New York Minute. Seriously.

I'm lagged. Don't know if it is from the jet, the sights, the thrill of meeting so many people..... Last Saturday I spoke at Seth Apter's artist panel for his new book, The Pulse of Mixed Media. I don't like speaking about myself (hence, my no interview policy), but I did enjoy the back and forth with the panelists and attendees. It was great!

The day with Seth was short, but I had a blast with Michelle Ward on Saturday. Yah, it was pretty much the "Grand Tour"...exactly how I tour people when they visit me in San Diego- fast, furious and fun. REFRESHING.

Special shout out to my friend, Alicia. She's not an artist..I don't have many art friends in San Diego.. but when I said, "Hey- you wanna go to New York for an art panel?" She, without hesitation, said, YES. Golden. We were travel warriors. Checking in everywhere so our husbands and friends could follow us around. We saw everything we wanted to see. Our motto for the long weekend was, "In it to win it" and when our feet were bloodied and our sinus' were jacked up, we kept going...walking miles in the rain in the middle of the night for Lobster Rolls...even AFTER we had eaten dinner that night. En fuego. She's the best.

Special shout outs to my my online friends who are now in person friends JeriAnn Geller and Laura Khoudari. JeriAnn gave us a great foot tour for a few hours on Friday and Laura took us to a fantastic locals restaurant on Friday night...you guys are the best!

More pictures coming soon!

Meet La Lettera; Original Art For Sale

La Lettera is a mixed-media original painting that I recenly made. It's a moody abstract piece that would look great as part of your contemporary or traditional decor. The painting measures 18x24x1.5" and has dark painted sides. The top portion of the painting has a cool "plank-like" texture.

La Lettera is available for $350 + shipping cost. Please contact me if you are interested.

*La Lettera is made from a lesson in my new online workshop, "Act Natural". This new workshop offers a free bonus art journaling workshop if you sign up before 3/28. Click here for more details.

You have to see it for yourself...

I had these two pieces framed and I love how they look.. makes me feel more important than I am to have a frame. Shop around, I bought acrylic (instead of glass) on the internet and then found a local frame shop where you don't need a coupon to get a good price. Imagine that.. You know what I've said about coupons before right? If you need to use a coupon at a shop to get a decent price, you're not getting a good price. If the shop sends out coupons over and over again....come on. They've marked up the prices to smithereens in order to cover the drop in profit they get when they run the coupon..they are still making a ton of money. Trust me on this one.

News: Twitter party tonight at 6pm Pacific. Use the hashtag #Pulsebook in honor of Seth's new book launch. I'll tweet to anyone who tweets to me. You can follow me on Twitter here. Speaking of having to see it for yourself..I got a copy of the book yesterday. MAN. READING EVERY WORD. I love it!

More Newer News: Ever so generous Jaime from The Crafters Workshop has given me another load of 12x12 stencils to give away! Stay tuned...we'll be giving those away on the blog here in a couple weeks!

Don't forget! BRAND NEW ONLINE WORKSHOP from Yours Truly...here are the details..and if you order by 3/28, you get a free Super Nova pass!

I don't even know what..

Concretion; 11x14 acrylic and graphite on canvas

I wonder how many times I have used, "I don't even know what" as a post title... It's a line from the song, "Pumped Up Kicks" that I sing over and over in my head all the time. Just that line...and I do the whistle too.. I also sing, "What if God was one of us" and "I shot the sheriff" a lot. Got a theme song you sing over and over?

Sakes alive..I never looked at the video for this..I am having heart palpitations!

I love old paper.

16x20; mixed media

I've been studying my flea market treasures and have come to the realization that no matter what has been printed on the paper, I love the color. I love the caramel, beige and tan of old paper. I love the feeling of history and being that color evokes. I find it in my palette. A lot.

The Pulse: Julie Prichard vs. Seth Apter

Please join me in celebrating the launch of my friend's new book, "The Pulse of Mixed Media", by mixed-media power artist, Seth Apter. Hooray!

painting created for Seth's Book; Slope acrylic on canvas, 11x14"

For the last couple of years I have been tuned in to my computer every Sunday morning, meeting artists, reading survey responses and learning so many new things. The Pulse (Seth's massive online artist survey) is an amazing time spent surfing the internet. The concept is now available in book format and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!

Thirty-one artists answered a barrage of questions and made new art to be featured in the book. I am so happy to be a part of this. My favorite part of this collaboration? The diversity. Every artist is different and I really feel that Seth has done an amazing job of exposing the community on his website to artists and artwork that may have not been recognized otherwise. I know I am forever grateful.

I've answered way too many questions to count.. so I want to know:

What is the one thing that you know now that you would have liked to have known when you first started to create art?

From Seth: "I think the one thing that I know now that I did not know back then was the importance of making art for yourself. And what I mean by that is the realization that no matter what the reason is for making any particular piece (art for sale, submission, collaboration, exhibition, etc), your best work comes when you shut all that out and just create from within. If you go about creating with or for an agenda, creativity can be stifled. If you go about creating a piece that really comes from and pleases you, creativity soars. And the final artwork is all the better as a result."

Acoustic Ceiling Tile...and me.

Here is a new painting. Acrylic on canvas, 11x14

I was getting my hair cut yesterday and while I was getting my color washed out,  I started to think. An idea came to me. A grandiose idea..something I have thought about before, but it now seems like something that is actually possible. It's all this new thinking I've been doing...

I sat there for a good 5 minutes, eyes locked on a vent that was in the ceiling above my wash station. What about this? What about that? What about my contract? It's too big..it's will take forever..what if no one likes it? These thoughts come and go all the time, I think that it is totally natural to have those feelings.. the problem was that while I was doing all this thinking, my hairdresser was talking to me. Oops. I was totally engrossed.

I'm thinking. Thinking about myself and what I want from myself. The "Myself Project" is alive and well and it feels good. I know this seems like a huge mess of mumbo jumbo at the moment..and it does to me too..but I need to get to where I am going, as soon as I figure out where, I will let you know for sure.

In the meantime, please enjoy my art.

xo

PS- anyone want to hear this mumbo jumbo in person? I am lucky enough to be speaking here soon.

Art. Report.Progress.

new art, acrylic on stretched canvas, 11x14

The gauge. I have an exact moment of when I decided to give up my gemology career. It was when my daughter was born. When she was about 6 months old, I left my colleagues and decided to stay home. It was only a few days after that when I realized I would soon go out of my mind. I needed something to do.. I had been making cards and rubber stamping for a few years prior to that and I had been blogging too.. but I needed more.

The biggest shock to me after leaving the work-force after so long was that I didn't have any teammates anymore. I didn't have any business related goals and I didn't have any reporting or things to focus on to improve. Does that make sense? I was brainwashed (although I enjoyed every minute of it) into gathering a team, giving the team all the tools they needed to excel and breaking goals that were set for all of us. I love reporting the challenges to the team and watching the team grow. I left my team. I was alone.

I know a lot of people will argue that I am not alone..I've got all of you fine people here..and I have made so many new friends in the past 6 years...but it's not the same, you know what I mean. BUT that very reason of climb, climb, climb...go, go, go...may be the reason I am having so much trouble with a little burn out.

Why today? Because yesterday we celebrated my girl's 6th birthday. On that day I am always proud to see where I have been and how big she is getting. (I also make it a point to mention that she was 9lbs 15oz at birth and my delivery took 39.5 hours. I'll never forget that! So do I celebrate? You better believe it.)

Happy birthday to us!

Spray Paint? Yes.

Stampington & Co requested that I make this piece for a spray paint tutorial a long time ago. The article never appeared in print, but the artwork had a small blurb in the latest Gallery issue. I forgot about the art and when it came back home, I was really happy to see it. I look at this piece a lot and each time I find a hidden layer deep inside. Do you look at your older paintings and smile?

Resolutions? No. You?

A small piece of a large painting for our book..

Yesterday was E.A.S.Y. I did not cook that much (subsequently I did not eat that much either...great how that worked out) and opted for prepared foods...mostly from Trader Joes. It was so great to sit with my mom and dad all day without having to keep one eye on the oven or stove. My pledge is more holiday's like this one...hopefully I can remember that next year.. Please remind me.

Do you make resolutions? I don't.. I feel like if I make them, I have a great chance of letting myself down.. so instead of waiting for one day to come around to make a change, I just try my best every day instead. Know what I mean?

Get any cool art gifts? I got this book and by first glance, it seems pretty interesting. I am looking forward to reading through it. Still looking to fuel your creativity? Don't forget we're all on sale thru New Year's Eve. Huge workshops. Small price.

Representation.

Moo put their cards on sale on Cyber Monday and I ordered some new cards.. I opted for the full sized, rounded corner model. I had the mini-moo last order and I felt like although they were cute, they were lost in the see of papers I carry around..so no telling where they ended up when I handed them out.

These two paintings are going to be in my book when it comes out..they are 24x24" paintings.....and this is only a small peek at each of them. They are a great representation of my work these days I think.. Moo's color correction is not as fabulous as I would like it, but I think that the paper quality makes up for that.

Thanks for stopping in today!

Paintings like this are explained in depth in our Layer Love v2.0 online workshop..now on sale!
